The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Stronghold” it comes from the Hebrew Word “matsor” which means “stronghold, fortress.”

Zechariah records the burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest of it, when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord, Hamath also bordering thereby, Tyrus and Zidon, though it be very wise, Tyrus building herself a “stronghold,” “matsor” in Hebrew, and heaping up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets. Zechariah warns the Lord will cast her out, and He will smite her power in the sea, and she shall be devoured with fire, Ashkelon seeing it, and fearing, Gaza also seeing it, and being very sorrowful, and Ekron, for her expectation shall be ashamed, the king perishing from Gaza, and Ashkelon not being inhabited, a bastard dwelling in Ashdod, and He will cut off the pride of the Philistines, He will encamp about His house because of the army, because of him who passes by, and because of him who returns, and no oppressor shall pass through them any more. Zechariah delivers one of Scripture’s most striking messianic prophecies, declaring, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass,” a prophecy Matthew and John both directly connect to Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, promising He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off, and He shall speak peace to the heathen, and His dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth, closing with a promise that He will save His people in that day as the flock of His people, for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon His land.
Zechariah’s precise prophecy, the coming King riding humbly upon a donkey rather than a warhorse, found dramatic, literal fulfillment centuries later when Jesus entered Jerusalem exactly this way, an event all four Gospels record. This chapter’s striking combination, a genuinely humble, peaceable king whose dominion nonetheless extends from sea to sea, captures Scripture’s paradoxical portrait of a Messiah who conquers through humility rather than conventional military might.
