The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Sin” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chattat” which means “sin.”

Zechariah promises in that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for “sin,” “chattat” in Hebrew, and for uncleanness, declaring He will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered, and He will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
Zechariah warns that if anyone yet prophesies falsely, then his father and his mother who begat him shall say to him, he shall not live, for he speaks lies in the name of the Lord, his father and his mother who begat him thrusting him through when he prophesies, describing how in that day the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he has prophesied, neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive, but he shall say he is no prophet, he is a husbandman, for man taught him to keep cattle from his youth.
Zechariah delivers the Lord’s startling command, “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones,” a prophecy Jesus Himself directly quotes concerning His own disciples on the night of His betrayal, describing how in all the land, two parts in it shall be cut off and die, but the third shall be left in it, He bringing the third part through the fire, and refining them as silver is refined, and trying them as gold is tried, they calling on His name, and He hearing them, He saying it is His people, and they saying the Lord is their God, this remarkable chapter joining cleansing, purifying judgment, and the striking of the shepherd into a unified picture of costly redemption.
Zechariah’s remarkable prophecy, smite the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered, directly quoted by Jesus Himself concerning His disciples on the night of His arrest, demonstrates this ancient book’s continuing, direct relevance to the Gospel accounts centuries later. His promise of a cleansing fountain opened for sin and uncleanness anticipates genuine, complete spiritual cleansing beyond what the temple’s restored sacrificial system alone could ultimately provide.
