The beloved responds to her invitation, declaring he has come into his garden, gathered his myrrh with his spice, eaten his honeycomb with his honey, drunk his wine with his milk, urging his friends to eat, and drink abundantly, the bride describing herself as sleeping, but her heart awake, hearing the voice of her beloved knocking, asking her to open to him, since his head is filled with dew, and his locks with the drops of the night.
The bride describes having put off her coat, being reluctant to put it back on, her beloved putting his hand by the hole of the door, her “bowels,” “me’im” in Hebrew, meaning her inner being, being moved for him, rising up to open for her beloved, her hands dropping with myrrh, but her beloved having withdrawn himself, and was gone, her soul failing when he spoke, seeking him but not finding him, calling him, but he giving her no answer, the watchmen finding her, smiting her, wounding her, taking away her veil.
The bride charges the daughters of Jerusalem, if they find her beloved, to tell him she is sick of love, the daughters asking what her beloved is more than another beloved, that she so charges them, the bride responding with an extensive, admiring description of her beloved, white and ruddy, his head as the finest gold, his locks bushy and black as a raven, his eyes as doves, his cheeks as a bed of spices, his lips like lilies dropping sweet smelling myrrh, closing with the declaration, “This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem,” this chapter’s honest portrayal of temporary separation and searching ultimately reaffirming the depth and endurance of genuine love.
This chapter’s honest portrayal of relational tension, missed timing, momentary hesitation, and painful searching, shows that even genuine, deep love experiences real difficulty and temporary disconnection rather than existing in constant, uninterrupted harmony.
