The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Smoke” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ashan” which means “smoke.”
The bride searches anxiously for her beloved through the city before finding him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Song of Solomon 3.
The bride describes seeking by night on her bed the one her soul loves, seeking him but not finding him, rising now and going about the city, in the streets and broad ways, seeking him her soul loves, the watchmen who go about the city finding her, to whom she asks whether they have seen him her soul loves, describing how it was but a little that she passed from them, when she found him whom her soul loves, holding him, and not letting him go, until she had brought him into her mother’s house.
The bride again charges the daughters of Jerusalem by the roes and hinds of the field, that they not stir up nor awake her love until he please, asking who this is that comes out of the wilderness like pillars of “smoke,” “ashan” in Hebrew, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the powders of the merchant.
The chapter describes Solomon’s own bed, threescore valiant men being about it, of the valiant of Israel, all holding swords, being expert in war, every man having his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night, describing King Solomon making himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon, its pillars of silver, its bottom of gold, its covering of purple, urging the daughters of Zion to go forth and behold King Solomon with the crown with which his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart, this chapter blending intimate personal searching with grand, celebratory wedding imagery.
The bride’s anxious nighttime search through the city streets, refusing to rest until she finds her beloved, captures the genuine intensity and vulnerability that real love involves, willing to risk discomfort and uncertainty for the sake of reunion. This chapter’s blend of intimate personal longing with grand, public wedding celebration shows that genuine love encompasses both private tenderness and joyful, shared public celebration.
