The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Spirit” it comes from the Greek Word “pneuma” which means “spirit.”
After the honest struggle of the previous chapter, Paul delivers one of the most reassuring passages in the entire Bible. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Romans 8.
Paul opens with a sweeping declaration of freedom. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit,” since the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed them from the law of sin and death, accomplishing what the law, weakened by human flesh, could never do. Those who live according to the Spirit, “pneuma” in Greek, set their minds on the things of the Spirit rather than the flesh, and if the Spirit of God dwells in them, they belong to Christ, with that same Spirit giving life to their mortal bodies. Paul explains that believers have received “the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father,” the Spirit itself bearing witness with their spirit that they are children of God, and if children, then heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, sharing both in His sufferings and His coming glory, a glory Paul insists is not worthy to be compared with the sufferings of the present time. He describes all creation groaning together, waiting eagerly for this coming redemption, while believers themselves groan inwardly, waiting for the full adoption, the redemption of their bodies, sustained meanwhile by hope and by the Spirit, who helps their weaknesses and intercedes for them with groanings that cannot be uttered. Paul offers one of Scripture’s most beloved promises. “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose,” describing an unbroken chain from God’s foreknowledge and predestination through calling, justification, and glorification. He closes with a triumphant, sweeping question. “If God be for us, who can be against us?” insisting that nothing, tribulation, distress, persecution, danger, or any other created thing, “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This chapter moves from complete freedom from condemnation to complete security in God’s love, an unbreakable chain running from His eternal purpose all the way through to final glory. Whatever struggle chapter seven honestly described, chapter eight answers it directly, nothing in all creation, including our own ongoing weakness, can separate us from that love.
