Paul declares the immediate result of justification by faith. “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Remarkably, Paul insists this joy extends even to suffering, since tribulation produces patience, patience produces experience, and experience produces hope, “and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.”
Paul highlights the extraordinary nature of God’s love, demonstrated not while people were worthy or lovable, but “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,” a love far exceeding even the rare human willingness to die for a genuinely good person. Having been justified through Christ’s blood, Paul reasons, believers will certainly be saved from wrath through Him, since if reconciliation, “katallasso” in Greek, was accomplished while people were still enemies, how much more will they be saved by His ongoing life now that they are reconciled.
Paul then draws a sweeping comparison between Adam and Christ, explaining how sin and death entered the world through one man’s disobedience, spreading to all people, yet God’s free gift through one man, Jesus Christ, far exceeds that offense. “As by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Paul explains that the law entered so that sin might be clearly recognized, yet wherever sin increased, grace increased even more abundantly, so that “as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
God’s love, according to Paul, was proven not by waiting for people to become deserving, but by dying for them while they were still His enemies. That timing changes everything about how grace actually works. It was never a reward for improvement, but a rescue offered in the very depths of humanity’s rebellion.
