Paul addresses a natural question, what advantage does being Jewish actually offer, and answers that it is significant, chiefly because “unto them were committed the oracles of God.” Even if some were unfaithful, Paul insists this does not nullify God’s own faithfulness, since “let God be true, but every man a liar.” He anticipates and firmly rejects the twisted logic that human sin somehow serves to highlight God’s righteousness, making judgment on such sin unfair.
Paul builds a devastating case using a string of Old Testament quotations, that “there is none righteous, no, not one… there is none that doeth good, no, not one,” concluding that every mouth is stopped and the whole world stands guilty before God, “for by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Every distinction between Jew and Gentile collapses under this universal verdict.
Having established this comprehensive need, Paul introduces the gospel’s remarkable solution. “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested… Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference.” He explains that people are “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith in His blood, demonstrating both God’s justice and His role as justifier of anyone who has faith in Jesus. Paul concludes that boasting is entirely excluded, since justification comes by faith apart from the works of the law, establishing rather than destroying the law’s deeper purpose.
Paul’s argument here dismantles every possible basis for human boasting, whether religious heritage, moral effort, or careful law-keeping. Everyone stands equally guilty, and everyone who is saved is saved the exact same way, through faith in what Christ accomplished. This leveling truth removes any room for spiritual pride, replacing it entirely with gratitude.
