Paul commends Phebe, a servant of the church at Cenchrea, likely the very person carrying this letter to Rome, asking the believers to receive her worthily and assist her in whatever business she needs, since she has been a helper of many, including Paul himself. He then greets an extensive list of individuals by name, Priscilla and Aquila, described as his “helpers in Christ Jesus” who risked their own lives for him, along with Epaenetus, Mary, Andronicus and Junia, and many others, each remembered personally and specifically, some described as his kinsmen, others as fellow prisoners, and Urbane called his “helper,” “synergos” in Greek, meaning fellow worker or co-laborer.
Paul warns the believers to watch carefully for those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine they have learned, and to avoid them, since such people serve their own appetites rather than the Lord Christ, deceiving the hearts of the simple through smooth and flattering speech. He reassures the Romans that their obedience is well known to everyone, expressing his desire for them to be wise concerning good and simple concerning evil, and promises that “the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.”
Paul passes along greetings from his companions, including Timotheus, Lucius, Jason, Sosipater, and Tertius, who actually wrote the letter itself, along with Gaius, Erastus, and Quartus. He closes this remarkable letter with a magnificent benediction, praising God who is able to establish the believers according to Paul’s gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began but now made known to all nations for obedience to the faith, “To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.”
This long list of personal names, easy to skim past, reveals something important about Paul’s ministry, it was never abstract or impersonal. Behind all the deep theology of this letter stood real relationships with real people he genuinely knew, valued, and remembered by name, a fitting close to a letter that moved from grand doctrine to deeply personal community.
