Paul instructs those who are strong to “bear the infirmities of the weak,” and not simply to please themselves, but to please their neighbor for their good, edifying them, following the example of Christ Himself, who did not please Himself either. He prays that the God of patience, “hypomone” in Greek, and consolation would grant believers to be likeminded toward one another according to Christ Jesus, “that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,” and urges them to receive one another exactly as Christ also received them, to the glory of God.
Paul explains that Christ became a servant to the circumcision to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs, and that Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, quoting several Old Testament passages describing Gentiles rejoicing alongside God’s people. He prays that the God of hope would fill them with all joy and peace in believing, so that they might abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost, and expresses genuine confidence in the Roman believers themselves, that they are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to admonish one another.
Paul explains his own ministry as a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, having fully preached the gospel from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, always aiming to preach where Christ was not yet named, so as not to build on another man’s foundation. He describes his long-held desire to finally visit Rome on his way to Spain, but explains he must first travel to Jerusalem to deliver a collection gathered from Macedonia and Achaia for the poor believers there, asking the Roman believers to strive together with him in prayer that he would be delivered from those in Judaea who do not believe, and that his service there would be acceptable to the saints.
Paul’s description of his own ministry priorities, always pressing toward unreached territory rather than building on someone else’s foundation, reveals a pioneering spirit driven by genuine urgency. His request for prayer support before a dangerous journey also shows real vulnerability, a reminder that even the most experienced apostle depended on the church’s prayer, not just his own strength.
