John describes the fifth angel sounding, and he sees a star fall from heaven to earth, and to him was given the key of the bottomless “pit,” “abyssos” in Greek, and he opens the bottomless pit, and there arises a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit, and there come out of the smoke locusts upon the earth, to whom power was given, as the scorpions of the earth have power. John describes these locusts being commanded not to hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God in their foreheads, and to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months, and their torment being as the torment of a scorpion when he strikes a man, describing these strange creatures in detail, shapes like horses prepared for battle, crowns like gold on their heads, faces like men, hair like women, teeth like lions, breastplates of iron, wings sounding like chariots of many horses running to battle, having tails like scorpions, and stings in their tails, having a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, named Abaddon in Hebrew, and in Greek his name being Apollyon. John describes the sixth angel sounding, and a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, saying to the sixth angel, loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates, and the four angels were loosed, who were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, to slay the third part of men, describing an army of horsemen, two hundred thousand thousand, by the fire, smoke, and brimstone which issued out of their mouths, the third part of men being killed, yet the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood, neither repented they of their murders, sorceries, fornication, nor thefts, this sobering conclusion revealing humanity’s persistent, tragic resistance to repentance even amid such devastating, unmistakable judgment.
This chapter’s vivid, almost surreal description of locust-like tormentors emerging from the bottomless pit uses striking, memorable imagery to communicate genuine spiritual and physical torment accompanying humanity’s persistent rebellion. Its sobering closing observation, that even such devastating judgment failed to produce genuine repentance, illustrates how thoroughly entrenched sin can resist even the clearest, most severe consequences when the human heart remains genuinely unwilling to change.
