John describes when the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there being silence in heaven about the space of half an hour, and he sees the seven angels who stood before God, and to them were given seven “trumpets,” “salpigx” in Greek, another angel coming and standing at the altar, having a golden censer, much incense being given to him, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. John describes the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascending up before God out of the angel’s hand, the angel taking the censer, filling it with fire of the altar, and casting it into the earth, and there were voices, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake, then the seven angels prepare themselves to sound, the first angel sounding, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth, and the third part of trees was burned up, and all green grass was burned up. John describes the second angel sounding, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire being cast into the sea, and the third part of the sea becoming blood, the third angel sounding, and a great star falling from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, falling upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters, the name of the star being called Wormwood, the fourth angel sounding, and the third part of the sun being smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars, closing with an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound,” this dramatic escalation of judgment introducing the trumpet sequence that continues intensifying throughout the following chapters.
This chapter’s striking image, the prayers of the saints ascending as incense before God, then mingling with fire cast down to the earth, suggests a profound, mysterious connection between believers’ genuine prayers and God’s actual, unfolding response throughout history. The dramatic silence in heaven for half an hour before this sequence begins offers a striking pause, suggesting even heaven itself pauses in solemn anticipation before such significant, consequential events unfold.
