John describes the Lamb opening one of the seals, and hearing one of the four beasts say, “Come and see,” and he looks, and behold a white “horse,” “hippos” in Greek, and he who sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he went forth conquering, and to conquer, describing the second seal, a red horse, power given to take peace from the earth, that they should kill one another, a great sword being given to him. John describes the third seal, a black horse, he who sat on him having a pair of balances in his hand, a voice saying a measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny, describing the fourth seal, a pale horse, he who sat on him being named Death, and Hell following with him, power being given to them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, hunger, death, and with the beasts of the earth, describing the fifth seal, souls under the altar who were slain for the word of God, crying with a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood,” being given white robes, and told to rest yet for a little season. John describes the sixth seal, a great earthquake, the sun becoming black as sackcloth of hair, the moon becoming as blood, the stars of heaven falling to the earth, even as a fig tree casts her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind, the heaven departing as a scroll when it is rolled together, every mountain and island being moved out of their places, the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, hiding themselves in the dens and rocks of the mountains, crying to the mountains and rocks to fall on them, and hide them from the face of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, since the great day of His wrath has come, asking who shall be able to stand, this dramatic sequence of seals introducing the escalating series of judgments that will unfold throughout the remainder of this remarkable book.
This chapter’s four horsemen, conquest, war, famine, and death, offer a vivid, memorable picture of the escalating chaos and suffering that accompany human history’s persistent rebellion against God’s rightful rule. The martyrs’ honest question beneath the altar, how long before you judge and avenge our blood, gives genuine voice to the real longing for justice that suffering believers across every generation have shared while awaiting God’s ultimate vindication.
