John describes seeing in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals, and a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” but no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look on it, so John wept much, since no man was found worthy to open and read the book, neither to look on it. John describes one of the elders telling him not to weep, since the “Lion,” “leon” in Greek, of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book, and to loose its seven seals, and John looks, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth, and He comes and takes the book out of the right hand of Him who sat upon the throne. John describes how when He had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of saints, singing a new song, “Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation,” John hearing the voice of many angels round about the throne, the number of them being ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing,” every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea, closing with a resounding declaration of blessing, honor, glory, and power to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever.
This chapter’s dramatic reversal, expecting a mighty Lion but finding instead a slain Lamb worthy to open the scroll, captures the gospel’s central, paradoxical truth, that genuine victory came through sacrifice rather than mere conquest alone. This magnificent, expanding chorus of worship, from four living creatures to elders to countless angels to every creature in existence, offers a breathtaking vision of universal praise directed toward the Lamb who was genuinely slain for redemption.
