John describes seeing a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea, and he sees the holy city, new “Jerusalem,” “Ierousalem” in Greek, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, hearing a great voice out of heaven, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” John hears this voice declaring, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away,” Him who sat upon the throne saying, “Behold, I make all things new,” instructing him to write, for these words are true and faithful, declaring, “It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” John describes being carried away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, shown the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its light being like a stone most precious, describing its walls, gates, and foundations in extensive, magnificent detail, twelve gates, named after the twelve tribes of Israel, twelve foundations, with the names of the twelve apostles, the city being measured with a golden reed, its length, breadth, and height being equal, describing its walls being of jasper, the city being pure gold, its foundations garnished with precious stones, closing with the observation that he sees no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple, the city having no need of the sun or moon to shine in it, for the glory of God lightens it, and the Lamb is its light.
This chapter’s magnificent vision, God’s tabernacle finally dwelling permanently among humanity with every tear wiped away and death itself abolished, offers the ultimate resolution toward which this entire remarkable book, and indeed all of Scripture, has consistently been building. Its striking detail, that this glorious city contains no temple since God and the Lamb are themselves its temple, reveals restoration so complete that even the previous mediating structures of worship become genuinely unnecessary in God’s direct, unmediated presence.
