John witnesses a vision of a corrupt, powerful woman riding a scarlet beast. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Revelation 17.
John describes one of the seven angels who had the seven vials talking with him, saying, “Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,” carrying him away in the spirit into the wilderness, where he sees a woman sit upon a scarlet colored “beast,” “therion” in Greek, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. John describes this woman being arrayed in purple and scarlet color, decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication, upon her forehead a name being written, “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH,” John seeing this woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus, wondering with great admiration when he sees her. John records the angel explaining the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and ten horns, describing how the beast that he saw was, and is not, and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition, and those who dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, explaining the seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits, and the ten horns being ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet, but receive power as kings one hour with the beast, closing with the explanation that these shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful, the ten horns eventually hating the whore, making her desolate and naked, eating her flesh, and burning her with fire.
This chapter’s stark imagery of the great whore, drunk with the blood of saints yet ultimately destroyed by her own allies, illustrates how corrupt, exploitative power systems often eventually consume even their own supporters and collaborators. Its confident declaration that the Lamb shall overcome, being Lord of lords and King of kings, provides reassuring perspective that no earthly power, however seemingly dominant and entrenched, can ultimately withstand Christ’s genuine, guaranteed authority.
