John hears a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth,” the first angel pouring out his vial upon the earth, a noisome and grievous “sore,” “helkos” in Greek, falling upon those who had the mark of the beast, and those who worshiped his image, the second angel pouring out his vial upon the sea, and it becomes as the blood of a dead man, every living soul dying in the sea. John describes the third angel pouring out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters, and they become blood, the angel of the waters declaring God righteous in these judgments, since they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and He has given them blood to drink, for they are worthy, the fourth angel pouring out his vial upon the sun, power being given to him to scorch men with fire, yet men blaspheming the name of God, and repenting not to give Him glory, the fifth angel pouring out his vial upon the seat of the beast, his kingdom being full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain, yet still not repenting of their deeds. John describes the sixth angel pouring out his vial upon the great river Euphrates, its water being dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared, describing three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet, gathering the kings of the earth to the battle of the great day of God Almighty, at a place called Armageddon, the seventh angel pouring out his vial into the air, a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done,” describing voices, thunders, lightnings, and a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, the great city being divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations falling, closing with great hail falling from heaven upon men, and men blaspheming God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceeding great.
This chapter’s repeated observation that even amid such severe, devastating judgment people continued blaspheming rather than repenting reveals how thoroughly hardened hearts can become, actively choosing continued rebellion even when confronted with unmistakable, overwhelming consequence. The naming of Armageddon as the site of final, decisive conflict has become deeply embedded in cultural consciousness as shorthand for climactic, world-altering confrontation between good and evil.
