John describes standing upon the sand of the sea, and seeing a “beast,” “therion” in Greek, rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy, the beast he sees being like a leopard, his feet as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion, the dragon giving him his power, his seat, and great authority. John describes one of the beast’s heads as if it were wounded to death, but his deadly wound being healed, and all the world wondering after the beast, worshiping the dragon who gave power to the beast, and worshiping the beast, saying, “Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?” a mouth being given to him speaking great things and blasphemies, power being given to him to continue forty-two months, describing another beast coming up out of the earth, having two horns like a lamb, but speaking as a dragon, exercising all the power of the first beast before him, causing the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. John describes this second beast doing great wonders, causing fire to come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, deceiving those who dwell on the earth, causing them to make an image to the beast, causing as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed, causing all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads, that no man might buy or sell, save he who had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name, closing with this remarkable, famous statement, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six,” this cryptic number generating extensive discussion and study throughout Christian history regarding its precise meaning and identification.
This chapter’s description of universal economic pressure, no one able to buy or sell without the beast’s mark, illustrates the genuine, comprehensive nature of the pressure believers may face to compromise their faith for practical survival and convenience. The famous number six hundred sixty-six, requiring genuine wisdom to properly understand, has generated centuries of careful study while consistently reinforcing this book’s central call toward discernment and faithful endurance regardless of overwhelming pressure.
