REVELATION 12 ‐ “The Woman and the Dragon”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Dragon” it comes from the Greek Word “drakon” which means “dragon, serpent.”

John witnesses a cosmic sign of a woman, a child, and a great red dragon. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Revelation 12.

John describes a great wonder appearing in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars, being with child, crying, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered, another wonder appearing in heaven, a great red “dragon,” “drakon” in Greek, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads, his tail drawing the third part of the stars of heaven, and casting them to the earth. John describes the dragon standing before the woman ready to be delivered, to devour her child as soon as it was born, and she brings forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron, and her child is caught up to God, and to His throne, the woman fleeing into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, describing war in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon, and the dragon fighting and his angels, but they did not prevail, neither was their place found any more in heaven, the great dragon being cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world, being cast out into the earth, and his angels being cast out with him. John describes hearing a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death,” but describing woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea, since the devil is come down to them, having great wrath, because he knows he has but a short time, the dragon then persecuting the woman, but she is given wings, and he is not able to prevail against her, closing with the dragon going to make war with the remnant of her seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

This chapter’s cosmic vision of the woman, dragon, and child, drawing on rich symbolic imagery throughout Scripture, illustrates the ancient spiritual conflict underlying visible earthly history, Satan’s persistent, ultimately futile effort to destroy God’s redemptive purposes. Its declaration that believers overcame Satan by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony offers genuine, practical assurance that ordinary faithful witness genuinely participates in this cosmic victory already secured.
