The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Temple” it comes from the Greek Word “naos” which means “temple, sanctuary.”

John is given a reed like a rod, and told to rise, and measure the “temple,” “naos” in Greek, of God, and the altar, and those who worship there, but to leave out the court which is without the temple, and measure it not, since it is given to the Gentiles, and the holy city they shall tread underfoot forty-two months, describing how He will give power to His two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. John describes these two witnesses as the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth, describing how if any man will hurt them, fire proceeds out of their mouth, and devours their enemies, these having power to shut heaven, that it not rain in the days of their prophecy, and having power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will, describing how when they have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them, their dead bodies lying in the street of the great city, and those who dwell upon the earth rejoicing over them, and making merry, sending gifts to one another, since these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. John describes how after three and a half days, the spirit of life from God enters into them, and they stand upon their feet, great fear falling upon those who saw them, and they hear a great voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up hither,” and they ascend up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies behold them, describing a great earthquake in the same hour, a tenth part of the city falling, seven thousand men being slain, the remnant being affrighted, and giving glory to the God of heaven, closing with the sounding of the seventh trumpet, great voices in heaven saying, “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever,” the four and twenty elders falling on their faces and worshiping God, this dramatic sequence culminating in a foretaste of the ultimate, complete establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
These two witnesses’ remarkable resurrection, standing up after three and a half days despite the world’s celebration over their apparent defeat, offers a powerful picture of vindication following genuine, costly faithful testimony even unto death. This chapter’s climactic declaration, the kingdoms of this world becoming the kingdom of our Lord and His Christ, provides a triumphant preview of the ultimate, certain outcome awaiting all the dramatic conflict this remarkable book continues to unfold.
