Moses declares, “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God,” describing how He turns man to destruction, and says, “Return, ye children of men.”
Moses declares that a thousand years in God’s sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night, comparing human life to grass which grows up in the morning and in the evening is cut down and withers, since they are consumed by His anger, and troubled by His wrath, their “days,” “yom” in Hebrew, being turned to dust, all their days passing away in His wrath, spending their years as a tale that is told.
Moses describes the days of their years as threescore years and ten, or by reason of strength fourscore years, yet their strength being labor and sorrow, for it is soon cut off, and they fly away, asking who knows the power of God’s anger, urging Him to teach them to number their days, that they may apply their hearts unto wisdom, pleading for God to return, and let it repent Him concerning His servants, satisfying them early with His mercy, that they may rejoice and be glad all their days, closing with a prayer that the beauty of the Lord their God would be upon them, establishing the work of their hands, a fitting, wise meditation opening this fourth book of the Psalms with sober reflection on mortality alongside genuine hope in God’s eternal, unchanging faithfulness.
Moses’s sobering comparison of human life to grass that flourishes briefly before withering offers timeless wisdom about mortality’s genuine brevity, a perspective valuable for maintaining right priorities across every generation. His famous prayer, teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom, remains one of Scripture’s most practical requests, asking not for longer life, but for the wisdom to genuinely value whatever days are actually given.
