The psalmist declares God’s foundation is in the holy mountains, the Lord loving the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob, describing glorious things being spoken of the city of God.
The psalmist declares remarkably that God will mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Him, along with Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia, saying, “This man was born there,” describing how of Zion it shall be said, “This and that man was born in her,” and the highest Himself shall establish her, the Lord counting when He writes up the “people,” “am” in Hebrew, “This man was born there.”
The psalmist closes describing both the singers and the players on instruments declaring, “All my springs are in thee,” a brief but remarkably inclusive psalm envisioning a future where citizens of even historically hostile foreign nations, Egypt (Rahab), Babylon, and Philistia, would themselves ultimately be counted as genuine citizens of Zion, spiritually born there regardless of their original earthly nationality.
This remarkably inclusive psalm’s vision, that citizens of historically hostile nations like Egypt and Babylon would themselves someday be counted as spiritually born in Zion, anticipates the gospel’s later, even more explicit welcome extended to all nations regardless of ethnic origin. Its brief but expansive scope reminds readers that God’s ultimate purposes for Zion always reached far beyond narrow national boundaries toward a genuinely universal, welcoming community.
