David opens declaring, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens,” describing how out of the mouth of babes and sucklings God has ordained strength because of His enemies, that He might still the enemy and the avenger.
David considers the heavens, the work of God’s fingers, the moon and the stars which He has ordained, and asks the profound question, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” marveling that God has made humanity a little lower than the angels, and crowned them with “glory,” “kavod” in Hebrew, and honor.
David describes how God has made man to have dominion over the works of His hands, putting all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, the beasts of the field, the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, closing exactly as he began, repeating the refrain, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” a psalm bookended by identical praise, framing humanity’s remarkable dignity entirely within the context of God’s own greater glory.
David’s wonder at humanity’s surprising dignity, crowned with glory and given dominion despite being so small compared to the vast heavens, offers a beautifully balanced perspective on human worth, significant yet entirely dependent on God’s gracious choice to be mindful of us. This psalm’s identical opening and closing praise reminds readers that human dignity ultimately finds its meaning only within the context of God’s own surpassing greatness.
