Solomon prays that God would give the king His judgments, and His righteousness to the king’s son, that he may judge God’s people with righteousness, and His poor with judgment, the mountains bringing peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
Solomon prays the king would judge the poor of the people, save the children of the needy, and break in pieces the oppressor, that he would fear God as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations, coming down like rain upon the mown grass, as showers that water the earth, in his days the righteous flourishing, and abundance of “peace,” “shalom” in Hebrew, so long as the moon endures.
Solomon describes this king’s dominion extending from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth, all kings falling down before him, and all nations serving him, since he shall deliver the needy when he cries, the poor also, and him who has no helper, sparing the poor and needy, and saving the souls of the needy, redeeming their soul from deceit and violence, closing with a sweeping vision that his name shall endure forever, being continued as long as the sun, all nations calling him blessed, this psalm’s language of universal, everlasting dominion pointing forward far beyond Solomon himself toward the Messiah’s own greater, eternal kingdom.
This royal psalm’s sweeping vision, a king’s dominion extending from sea to sea and his name enduring forever, describes an ideal reign that Solomon himself, despite his genuine wisdom and wealth, could never fully achieve or sustain. Its language of universal, everlasting kingship ultimately points beyond any merely human ruler toward the Messiah’s own greater, truly eternal kingdom still awaited by faithful readers across every subsequent generation.
