David declares, “Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him,” describing how smoke is driven away and wax melts before fire, so the wicked perish at God’s presence, while the righteous are glad and rejoice exceedingly, singing to God and extolling Him who rides upon the heavens.
David describes God as a father of the fatherless, and a “judge,” “dayan” in Hebrew, of the widows, in His holy habitation, setting the solitary in families, bringing out those who are bound with chains, though the rebellious dwell in a dry land, describing a triumphant procession as God went before His people through the wilderness, the earth shaking, the heavens dropping at His presence, even Sinai itself, at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
David describes an extended, celebratory vision of God’s procession into the sanctuary, the singers going before, the players on instruments following after, the damsels playing timbrels in the midst, praising God in the congregations, chariots of God being twenty thousand, even thousands of angels, the Lord among them as in Sinai, in the holy place, ascending on high, leading captivity captive, and receiving gifts for men, closing with a sweeping vision extending to kingdoms of the earth singing praises to the Lord, urging them to ascribe strength to God, whose excellency is over Israel, and His strength in the clouds, terrible out of His holy places, the God of Israel being He who gives strength and power to His people, declaring, “Blessed be God.”
This lengthy, triumphant psalm’s tender description of God as father to the fatherless and judge for widows reveals that the same God displaying overwhelming cosmic power also cares intimately for society’s most vulnerable members. Its vivid procession imagery, celebrating God’s triumphant entry among His worshiping people, offers a joyful, communal picture of worship as genuine celebration rather than merely solemn obligation.
