The psalmist prays that God would be merciful to them, and bless them, and cause His face to shine upon them, that His way may be known upon earth, His saving health among all “nations,” “goyim” in Hebrew, a prayer for personal blessing deliberately framed with a much larger, missional purpose in mind.
The psalmist calls the people to praise God, calling all the people to praise Him, declaring that then the nations shall be glad and sing for joy, since God shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.
The psalmist repeats the call for the people to praise God, declaring that then shall the earth yield her increase, and God, even their own God, shall bless them, closing with a universal vision, “God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him,” a brief but expansive psalm showing that genuine blessing was never meant to remain narrowly self-focused, but to overflow generously toward the wellbeing of the entire world.
This brief psalm’s deliberate framing, praying for personal blessing specifically so that God’s ways would become known among all nations, models genuinely outward-focused prayer rather than self-centered petition.
