David prays for protection against enemies who scheme secretly against him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 64.
David asks God to hear his voice in his prayer, preserving his life from fear of the enemy, hiding him from the secret “counsel,” “sod” in Hebrew, of the wicked, from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity, who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words.
David describes how they shoot secretly at the perfect, suddenly they shoot at him, and fear not, encouraging themselves in an evil matter, communing of laying snares secretly, saying who shall see them, searching out iniquities, accomplishing a diligent search, both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, being deep.
David declares that God shall shoot at them with an arrow, suddenly shall they be wounded, so they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves, all who see them fleeing away, all men fearing, and declaring the work of God, wisely considering His doing, the righteous being glad in the Lord, and trusting in Him, all the upright in heart glorying, a psalm confident that hidden schemes will eventually meet an equally decisive, public reversal.
David’s description of enemies who scheme secretly, confident no one is watching them plot, captures the particular unsettling danger of hidden threats that cannot be directly confronted or defended against through ordinary means. This psalm’s confidence that God will reverse their own weapons back upon themselves offers real assurance that secret wickedness, however carefully concealed, ultimately remains fully visible before Him.
