PSALMS 60 ‐ “O God, Thou Hast Cast Us Off”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Truth” it comes from the Hebrew Word “emet” which means “truth.”

David laments national defeat while still trusting God’s ultimate power to grant victory. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 60.

David laments that God has cast them off, scattered them, and been displeased, asking Him to turn Himself to them again, describing how He has made the earth to tremble, and broken it, healing its breaches, since it shakes, showing His people hard things, making them drink the wine of astonishment.

David asks that a banner be given to those who fear God, that it may be displayed because of the “truth,” “emet” in Hebrew, praying that God’s beloved may be delivered, and asking Him to save with His right hand, and hear him, describing how God has spoken in His holiness, that He will rejoice, dividing Shechem, and measuring out the valley of Succoth, Gilead and Manasseh being His, Ephraim also the strength of His head, Judah His lawgiver.

David describes Moab as His washpot, casting his shoe over Edom, and asking who will bring him into the strong city, who will lead him into Edom, asking whether God has not cast them off, and whether He will not go forth with their armies, pleading for help from trouble, since the help of man is vain, closing with confident declaration, “Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies,” a psalm honestly processing national defeat while still ultimately trusting God alone for eventual victory.

David’s honest acknowledgment of national defeat and God’s apparent displeasure, rather than glossing over genuine setback with forced positivity, models mature faith that can process real disappointment while still ultimately trusting God’s greater purposes. This psalm’s closing conviction, that human help alone is vain but through God real victory remains possible, offers enduring perspective for facing any collective setback or genuine national crisis.
