David pleads for deliverance from his enemies, to be defended from those who rise up against him, delivered from the workers of iniquity, and saved from bloody men, written when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him, describing how mighty men gather against him, not for his transgression, nor for his sin.
David describes his enemies returning at evening, making a noise like a dog, and going round about the city, belching out with their mouth, swords being in their lips, since they say, who hears, yet declaring, “But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision,” describing God as his “strength,” “oz” in Hebrew, watching for him, since God is his defense.
David asks God not to slay them, lest his people forget, but to scatter them by His power, and bring them down, for the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips, let them be taken in their pride, consuming them in wrath, so people would know that God rules in Jacob, unto the ends of the earth, closing with a repeated refrain, “I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing,” a fitting close moving from urgent danger toward confident, morning praise.
David’s vivid description of enemies prowling like dogs around the city at evening captures the genuine terror of being actively hunted, while his confident declaration that God laughs at such schemes offers real perspective on the ultimate futility of wickedness against divine protection. This psalm’s closing image of singing aloud of God’s mercy specifically in the morning suggests that dawn often brings renewed clarity and hope after a genuinely difficult, threatening night.
