David asks the corrupt judges whether they indeed speak righteousness, and judge uprightly the sons of men, accusing them instead of working wickedness in their heart, weighing the violence of their hands in the earth, describing how the wicked are estranged from the womb, going astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
David describes their “venom,” “chemah” in Hebrew, being like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops her ear, which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, however skillfully they charm, praying that God would break their teeth in their mouth, and break out the great teeth of the young lions.
David prays they would melt away as waters which run continually, and when he bends his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces, that they would be like a snail which melts, like the untimely birth of a woman that never sees the sun, closing with the declaration, “the righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance… So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth,” an unflinchingly honest prayer against injustice reflecting genuine longing for God’s righteous judgment against corrupt authority.
David’s raw, unflinching prayer against corrupt judges reflects genuine outrage at systemic injustice rather than mere personal grievance, a form of prayer sometimes uncomfortable but genuinely honest before God about real wickedness in positions of authority. This psalm’s closing affirmation, that God judges righteously in the earth, provides real assurance that corrupt power will not ultimately escape genuine, appropriate accountability.
