David asks God to give ear to his prayer, and not hide Himself from his supplication, attending to him and hearing him, since he mourns in his complaint and makes noise because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked, since they cast iniquity upon him, and in wrath they hate him.
David expresses genuine desperation, “My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me… And I said, Oh that I had “wings,” “kanaph” in Hebrew, “like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest,” longing to escape far off and remain in the wilderness, hastening his escape from the windy storm and tempest.
David describes with particular pain that it was not an enemy who reproached him, which he could have borne, but it was his own equal, his guide, and his familiar friend, with whom he took sweet counsel together, and walked to the house of God in company, praying that death would seize them, since wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them, yet declaring, “As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me… Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved,” closing with confident trust despite the genuine pain of this personal betrayal.
David’s famous longing for wings like a dove to simply fly away captures the universal human desire to escape overwhelming pressure rather than continuing to face it directly, a longing Scripture never condemns as inherently faithless. His particular anguish over betrayal by a close friend, someone with whom he once walked to God’s house together, adds genuine emotional depth to this psalm’s eventual, hard-won turn toward trusting God with his burden.
