David asks why the mighty man boasts himself in mischief, since the goodness of God endures continually, his tongue devising mischiefs, working deceitfully like a sharp razor, loving evil more than good, and lying rather than speaking righteousness, loving all devouring “words,” “dabar” in Hebrew, and a deceitful tongue.
David declares that God shall likewise destroy him forever, take him away, pluck him out of his dwelling place, and root him out of the land of the living, the righteous also seeing it, and fearing, laughing at him, saying, “Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.”
David contrasts himself with this wicked man, declaring he is like a green olive tree in the house of God, trusting in the mercy of God forever and ever, promising to praise God forever, because He has done it, waiting on His name, for it is good before His saints, a brief but pointed psalm exposing the emptiness of trusting in wealth and cruelty rather than genuine, humble dependence on God.
David’s vivid image of a green olive tree flourishing within God’s house offers a striking contrast to the boastful, self-reliant wicked man rooted only in his own fleeting wealth and cruelty. This psalm reminds readers that genuine flourishing comes not from accumulated power or possessions, but from remaining rooted, like that healthy olive tree, in genuine trust and ongoing relationship with God.
