PSALMS 48 ‐ “Great Is the Lord, and Greatly to Be Praised”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Refuge” it comes from the Hebrew Word “misgav” which means “refuge, high place.”

The psalmist celebrates Jerusalem’s beauty and security as the city of the great King. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 48.

The psalmist declares great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of their God, in the mountain of His holiness, beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King, God being known in her palaces for a “refuge,” “misgav” in Hebrew.

The psalmist describes how kings assembled, they passed by together, they saw it and marveled, being troubled and hastening away, fear taking hold upon them there, and pain as of a woman in travail, God breaking the ships of Tarshish with an east wind, declaring that as they have heard, so have they seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, God establishing it forever.

The psalmist describes thinking on God’s lovingkindness in the midst of His temple, His name reaching to the ends of the earth, His right hand being full of righteousness, urging Mount Zion to rejoice, and the daughters of Judah to be glad, because of God’s judgments, urging them to walk about Zion, go round about her, tell the towers thereof, mark well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, so they might tell it to the generation following, closing with confident assurance, “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death,” a fitting close celebrating both the beauty of the earthly city and the greater security found ultimately in God Himself.

This psalm’s careful instruction to walk about Zion, count her towers, and consider her palaces, so as to tell the next generation, models intentional, deliberate effort to pass down genuine faith and gratitude rather than assuming it will simply transfer automatically. Its closing declaration, this God is our God forever, our guide even unto death, offers assurance that God’s presence extends reliably through every season of life, including its very end.
