The psalmist declares his heart overflows with a good matter, speaking of things he has made touching the king, his tongue being the pen of a ready writer, describing the king as fairer than the children of men, grace being poured into his lips, therefore God has blessed him forever.
The psalmist urges the king to gird his sword upon his thigh, his glory and his majesty, riding prosperously because of truth, meekness, and righteousness, his right hand teaching him terrible things, declaring remarkably, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever,” language the New Testament book of Hebrews directly applies to Christ, describing how he loves righteousness and hates “wickedness,” “resha” in Hebrew, therefore God, even his God, has anointed him with the oil of gladness above his fellows.
The psalmist turns to address the king’s bride, urging her to forget her own people and father’s house, so the king will greatly desire her beauty, describing her glorious apparel, wrought gold, and the virgins her companions that follow her being brought to the king with gladness and rejoicing, promising the king’s children will be made princes in all the earth, and his name remembered in all generations, so the people shall praise him forever and ever, a psalm originally celebrating a royal wedding that Christian tradition has long read as pointing toward Christ and His church.
