David declares he said he would take heed to his ways, that he sin not with his tongue, keeping his mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before him, describing how he was dumb with silence, held his peace even from good, and his sorrow was stirred, his heart hot within him, until he finally spoke with his tongue.
David asks the Lord to make him know his end, and the measure of his days, that he may know how “frail,” “chadel” in Hebrew, he is, observing that God has made his days as an handbreadth, his age being nothing before Him, every man at his best state being altogether vanity, walking in a vain shadow, disquieting himself in vain, heaping up riches without knowing who shall gather them.
David asks what he waits for, declaring his hope is in the Lord, asking to be delivered from all his transgressions, and not made the reproach of the foolish, since he became dumb and did not open his mouth because God did it, asking Him to remove His stroke away from him, since he is consumed by the blow of His hand, closing with a poignant, humble plea, “O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more,” a raw, honest meditation on mortality that nonetheless still turns hopefully toward God even amid such sobering awareness of life’s brevity.
David’s sobering meditation on life’s brevity, comparing his days to a mere handbreadth before God, offers a valuable corrective to any tendency toward taking earthly permanence for granted. His honest struggle with restrained speech, eventually giving way to genuine expression, shows that even wise self-control has limits when genuine sorrow demands honest, eventual acknowledgment before God.
