David urges his readers not to fret because of evildoers, nor be envious against the workers of iniquity, since they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb, urging them instead to trust in the Lord, and do good, to dwell in the land, and truly be fed, delighting themselves in the Lord, who shall give them the desires of their heart.
David urges committing one’s way to the Lord, trusting also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass, bringing forth their righteousness as the light, and their judgment as the noonday, urging them to rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him, not fretting because of one who prospers in his way, ceasing from “anger,” “aph” in Hebrew, and forsaking wrath, since evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait upon the Lord shall inherit the earth.
David observes that a little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked, since the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous, who knows the days of the upright, their inheritance being forever, not being ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine being satisfied, closing with sweeping assurance, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread,” urging his readers to depart from evil and do good, and dwell forevermore, since the Lord loves judgment, and does not forsake His saints.
David’s mature testimony, having been young and now old, that he has never seen the righteous truly forsaken, offers hard-won wisdom accumulated across an entire lifetime of observation rather than mere theoretical optimism. This psalm’s repeated instruction not to fret over apparent wicked prosperity provides practical, enduring guidance for maintaining faithful trust even when circumstances seem temporarily unjust or discouraging.
