The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Wings” it comes from the Hebrew Word “kanaph” which means “wings.”
David contrasts the wicked man’s self-deception with God’s boundless, reaching mercy. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 36.
David describes the transgression of the wicked, declaring there is no fear of God before his eyes, since he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful, the words of his mouth being iniquity and deceit, having ceased to be wise and to do good, devising mischief even upon his bed, setting himself in a way that is not good, not abhorring evil.
David turns dramatically to describe God’s character, “Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep,” declaring that God preserves man and beast, how excellent is His lovingkindness, so the children of men put their trust under the shadow of His “wings,” “kanaph” in Hebrew.
David describes how they shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of God’s house, and He shall make them drink of the river of His pleasures, since with Him is the fountain of life, and in His light shall they see light, praying that His lovingkindness would be continued to those who know Him, and His righteousness to the upright in heart, closing with confidence that there the workers of iniquity are fallen, cast down, and unable to rise, a striking movement from the wicked man’s small, self-deceived world to God’s vast, overflowing mercy reaching to the very heavens.
This psalm’s dramatic contrast, moving from the wicked man’s small, self-flattering deception directly into God’s mercy reaching to the heavens and righteousness like the great mountains, offers striking perspective on just how limited human self-deception truly is compared to God’s genuine vastness. Its beautiful image of finding refuge under God’s wings while drinking from His river of pleasures captures the abundant satisfaction available to those who genuinely trust Him.
