The psalmist calls the righteous to rejoice in the Lord, since praise is fitting for the upright, urging them to sing a new song, and play skillfully with a loud noise, since the word of the Lord is right, and all His works are done in truth, loving righteousness and judgment, the earth being full of His “goodness,” “chesed” in Hebrew.
The psalmist describes how the heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all their host by the breath of His mouth, gathering the waters of the sea together as a heap, laying up the depths in storehouses, urging all the earth to fear the Lord, and all the inhabitants of the world to stand in awe of Him, since He spoke, and it was done, He commanded, and it stood fast, bringing the counsel of the heathen to nothing, but His own counsel standing forever.
The psalmist declares that the Lord looks from heaven, beholding all the sons of men, from the place of His habitation He looks upon all the inhabitants of the earth, observing that no king is saved by the multitude of an army, nor a mighty man delivered by great strength, a horse being a vain thing for safety, but the Lord’s eye is upon those who fear Him, upon those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and keep them alive in famine, closing with confident trust, “Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield… Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”
This psalm’s sweeping declaration that God spoke and it was done offers a beautifully concise summary of creation’s origin through divine word alone, requiring no additional effort or struggle. Its observation that no army or horse ultimately provides genuine safety redirects trust away from impressive human resources toward the Lord’s watchful, merciful eye resting specifically upon those who fear and hope in Him.
