David declares he will extol the Lord, since He has lifted him up, and has not made his foes to rejoice over him, crying to the Lord his God, who healed him, bringing up his soul from the grave, keeping him alive that he should not go down to the pit.
David urges the saints to sing to the Lord, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness, since His anger endures but a moment, in His favor is life, weeping may endure for a “night,” “layil” in Hebrew, but joy comes in the morning, remembering how in his prosperity he said he would never be moved, since the Lord had made his mountain to stand strong.
David recalls how God hid His face and he was troubled, crying to Him and making supplication, asking what profit there is in his blood when he goes down to the pit, whether the dust can praise Him or declare His truth, pleading to be heard and helped, and declaring that God has turned his mourning into dancing, put off his sackcloth, and girded him with gladness, so his glory may sing praise to Him and not be silent, closing with grateful praise, “O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.”
David’s honest recollection of a season when prosperity led him to presume he would never be moved, followed by genuine crisis and humbling, offers realistic insight into how comfort can breed dangerous complacency if left unchecked.
