David declares, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” describing how when the wicked came against him to eat up his flesh, they stumbled and fell, and though a host should encamp against him, his heart shall not fear.
David expresses his central, deepest desire, “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the “beauty,” “no’am” in Hebrew, “of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple,” since in the time of trouble He shall hide him in His pavilion, and set him up upon a rock.
David pleads, “Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me… When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek,” asking Him not to hide His face, nor forsake him, since when his father and mother forsake him, then the Lord will take him up, closing with the famous encouragement, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD,” urging patient, courageous trust even amid ongoing uncertainty.
David’s singular, focused desire, simply to dwell in God’s presence and behold His beauty, cuts through every competing ambition to identify what ultimately matters most in a life of genuine faith. His closing exhortation to wait on the Lord with courage and strengthened heart offers enduring encouragement for anyone facing seasons where patient trust feels harder than any dramatic action might.
