David asks the Lord to judge him, since he has walked in his integrity, and has trusted in the Lord without wavering, asking Him to examine and prove him, to try his reins and his heart, since God’s “lovingkindness,” “chesed” in Hebrew, is before his eyes, and he has walked in His truth.
David declares he has not sat with vain persons, nor will he go in with dissemblers, having hated the congregation of evildoers, and refusing to sit with the wicked, instead washing his hands in innocency, compassing God’s altar, publishing with the voice of thanksgiving, and telling of all His wondrous works.
David expresses his love for the habitation of God’s house, and the place where His honor dwells, asking not to be gathered with sinners, nor his life with bloody men, in whose hands is mischief, and whose right hand is full of bribes, but declaring he will walk in his integrity, asking to be redeemed and shown mercy, closing with confidence, “My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD,” a fitting conclusion expressing settled confidence in his own tested integrity before God.
David’s willingness to invite God’s close examination of his heart and motives, rather than avoiding scrutiny, shows genuine confidence built on consistent, tested character rather than mere self-deception or wishful thinking. His deliberate separation from dishonest and violent company demonstrates that maintaining genuine integrity often requires actively choosing which relationships and environments to embrace or avoid.
