The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Law” it comes from the Hebrew Word “torah” which means “law, instruction.”
David marvels at two great witnesses to God, the vast heavens above and His perfect written law. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 19.
David declares that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork, day unto day uttering speech, and night unto night showing knowledge, with no speech or language where their voice is not heard, their line going out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world, describing the sun as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, rejoicing as a strong man to run a race.
David turns from creation’s silent witness to God’s spoken revelation, declaring that the “law,” “torah” in Hebrew, of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul, the testimony of the Lord sure, making wise the simple, the statutes of the Lord right, rejoicing the heart, the commandment of the Lord pure, enlightening the eyes, more to be desired than gold, sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
David acknowledges that by these his servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward, asking who can understand his errors, praying to be cleansed from secret faults, kept back from presumptuous sins, so they would not have dominion over him, then he would be upright, and innocent from the great transgression, closing with the familiar prayer, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
David’s movement from creation’s wordless but universal testimony to God’s spoken, written law shows two complementary ways God reveals Himself, general revelation through nature and specific revelation through Scripture. His closing prayer, that his words and heart’s meditation would be acceptable, remains one of Scripture’s most frequently echoed prayers for genuine integrity between inner thought and outward speech.
