The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Wind” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ruach” which means “wind, spirit, breath.”
David offers an extended, triumphant song of praise for deliverance from all his enemies. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 18.
David declares his love for the Lord, his strength, his rock, fortress, and deliverer, his God, his strength in whom he trusts, his buckler, the horn of his salvation, and his high tower, describing how in his distress he called upon the Lord, and cried to his God, who heard his voice out of His temple, his cry coming before Him into His ears.
David describes a dramatic, poetic theophany, the earth shaking and trembling, the foundations of the hills moving because God was angry, smoke going up from His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth devouring, bowing the heavens and coming down, riding upon a cherub and flying upon the wings of the “wind,” “ruach” in Hebrew, sending from above and taking him, drawing him out of many waters, delivering him from his strong enemy, since they were too strong for him.
David explains the Lord rewarded him according to his righteousness, according to the cleanness of his hands, since he has kept the ways of the Lord and has not wickedly departed from his God, declaring that with the merciful God will show Himself merciful, and with the upright man He will show Himself upright, closing this lengthy, triumphant psalm celebrating how God girded him with strength, made his way perfect, and set him on high, giving him the shields of salvation and making him great among the nations.
David’s dramatic, poetic description of God’s dramatic intervention, shaking the earth and riding upon the wind to rescue him, expresses genuine gratitude appropriate to the scale of deliverance he actually experienced. This extended psalm of praise, one of the longest and most elaborate in the entire collection, models wholehearted, unrestrained celebration when God’s faithfulness has proven itself so decisively real.
