David asks the Lord to hear the right, attend to his cry, give ear to his prayer, which does not come from feigned lips, asking Him to examine his heart, visit him in the night, try him, and He shall find nothing, since he has purposed that his mouth shall not transgress.
David describes his enemies who compass him about, their eyes set to bow down to the earth, comparing them to a lion greedy of his prey, and a young lion lurking in secret places, asking the Lord to arise and disappoint him, casting him down, delivering his soul from the wicked, who is God’s “sword,” “chereb” in Hebrew, from men of the world, who have their portion in this life.
David asks to be kept as the apple of the eye, hidden under the shadow of God’s wings, from the wicked who oppress him, his deadly enemies who compass him about, closing with beautiful confidence, “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness,” expressing hope that extends even beyond death itself into a genuine, satisfying encounter with God’s own presence.
David’s tender request to be kept as the apple of the eye and hidden under God’s wings captures a beautifully intimate picture of divine protection, tender and personal rather than distant or mechanical. His closing hope of beholding God’s face and being satisfied upon awaking offers one of the Old Testament’s clearest early glimpses of hope extending meaningfully beyond death itself.
