David asks God to preserve him, since in Him he puts his trust, declaring to the Lord that He is his Lord, his goodness extending not beyond Him, but to the saints in the earth, the excellent ones in whom is all his delight, while sorrows will multiply for those who hasten after another god.
David declares that the Lord is the portion of his inheritance and his cup, and that He maintains his lot, the lines falling to him in pleasant places, giving him a goodly “heritage,” “nachalah” in Hebrew, blessing the Lord who gives him counsel, his heart also instructing him in the night seasons, always setting the Lord before him, so that because He is at his right hand, he shall not be moved.
David declares his heart is glad, his glory rejoices, his flesh also resting in hope, since God will not leave his soul in hell, nor allow His Holy One to see corruption, and He will show him the path of life, in His presence being fullness of joy, and at His right hand pleasures forevermore, a psalm whose language of resurrection hope the New Testament directly applies to Christ’s own resurrection from the dead.
David’s confident declaration that God would not leave his soul in the grave nor allow decay to claim him carries prophetic weight far beyond his own lifetime, ultimately finding its fullest fulfillment in Christ’s resurrection. This psalm’s settled contentment, finding complete satisfaction in God alone as portion and inheritance, models genuine spiritual security that transcends any circumstance or possession.
