The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Snare” it comes from the Hebrew Word “pach” which means “snare, trap.”
David pleads for protection against violent men who set traps and speak deceitfully. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 140.
David pleads with the Lord to deliver him from the evil man, and preserve him from the violent man, who imagine mischiefs in their heart, continually gathering themselves together for war, sharpening their tongues like a serpent, adders’ poison being under their lips.
David asks to be kept from the hands of the wicked, and preserved from the violent man, who has purposed to overthrow his goings, describing how the proud have hidden a “snare,” “pach” in Hebrew, for him, and cords, spreading a net by the wayside, setting gins for him, declaring to the Lord that he is his God, asking Him to hear the voice of his supplications.
David declares the Lord is the strength of his salvation, covering his head in the day of battle, asking that the wicked not have their desires granted, lest they be exalted, and that the head of those who compass him about be covered with the mischief of their own lips, burning coals falling upon them, cast into the fire, and into deep pits, that they rise not up again, closing with confident assurance that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor, the righteous surely giving thanks to His name, and the upright dwelling in His presence.
David’s vivid description of enemies who sharpen their tongues like serpents and hide snares captures the genuine danger of both verbal and physical threats requiring real, deliberate vigilance and prayer for protection. This psalm’s closing confidence that God maintains the cause of the afflicted offers real reassurance for anyone facing calculated, deliberate harm from those actively plotting against them.
