The psalmist declares, “Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say: Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me,” describing how plowers plowed upon his back, making their furrows long.
The psalmist declares the Lord is “righteous,” “tsaddiq” in Hebrew, He has cut asunder the cords of the wicked, praying that all who hate Zion be confounded and turned back, being as the grass upon the housetops, which withers before it grows up.
The psalmist describes how the mower does not fill his hand with such grass, nor he who binds sheaves his bosom, neither do those who pass by say, “The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD,” a brief but confident psalm using memorable agricultural imagery to describe both persistent historical affliction and equally persistent, ultimate confidence that genuine wickedness bears no lasting fruit.
This psalm’s honest acknowledgment of persistent, longstanding affliction, many times from my youth, refuses to minimize genuine, extended suffering while still affirming that such affliction has not ultimately prevailed. Its striking image of rootless grass on rooftops, unable to be harvested or celebrated, offers a vivid, memorable picture of wickedness’s fundamental unfruitfulness despite whatever temporary flourishing it might display.
