The psalmist declares those who trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abides forever, describing how as the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about His people from this time forth and forevermore.
The psalmist observes that the “rod,” “shevet” in Hebrew, of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous, lest the righteous put forth their hands to iniquity, asking the Lord to do good to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts.
The psalmist declares that as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity, closing with a fitting benediction, “Peace shall be upon Israel,” a brief but confident psalm using Jerusalem’s surrounding mountains as a vivid, geographic picture of God’s own permanent, protective presence around His trusting people.
This psalm’s comparison of trusting believers to Mount Zion itself, immovable and permanent, offers a geographically grounded, visually memorable picture of the stability genuine trust in God can provide even amid surrounding uncertainty. Its observation that God surrounds His people just as mountains surround Jerusalem suggests protective presence that encloses and shelters from every direction rather than merely a distant, occasional intervention.
