David declares, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD,” describing how his feet stood within Jerusalem’s gates, this city being built as a city compact together, where the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, to the testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
David describes how thrones of judgment were set there, the thrones of the house of David, urging everyone to pray for the “peace,” “shalom” in Hebrew, of Jerusalem, promising those who love her shall prosper, asking that peace be within her walls, and prosperity within her palaces.
David declares that for his brethren and companions’ sakes, he will now say, peace be within Jerusalem, and because of the house of the Lord their God, he will seek her good, a brief but heartfelt psalm expressing genuine joy and deep, ongoing investment in the wellbeing of this beloved, central city of worship.
David’s simple opening declaration, I was glad when they said let us go into the house of the Lord, captures genuine enthusiasm for corporate worship that stands as a beautiful model against approaching gathering with God’s people as mere obligation.
