David cries, “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men,” describing how everyone speaks vanity with their neighbor, with flattering lips and a double heart, praying that the Lord would cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things.
David describes those who say their tongue will prevail, their lips being their own, questioning who is lord over them, but the Lord responds, “For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him,” a direct divine response promising decisive action on behalf of the vulnerable.
David declares that the words of the Lord are pure “words,” “imrah” in Hebrew, as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times, promising that the Lord will keep them, and preserve them from this generation forever, closing by observing that the wicked walk on every side when the vilest men are exalted, a psalm that honestly names cultural decay while still trusting in the enduring purity and reliability of God’s own promises.
David’s alarming observation that faithfulness seems to be disappearing from among people speaks with striking relevance to any generation that feels surrounded by deception and flattery rather than genuine integrity.
