The psalmist calls everyone to give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His mercy enduring forever, urging Israel, the house of Aaron, and all who fear the Lord to say so, describing calling upon the Lord in distress, and the Lord answering him, and setting him in a large place.
The psalmist declares the Lord is on his side, he will not fear what man can do to him, it being better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man or in princes, describing how all nations compassed him about, but in the name of the Lord he destroyed them, declaring, “The LORD is my “strength,” “oz” in Hebrew, “and song, and is become my salvation,” the voice of rejoicing and salvation being in the tabernacles of the righteous.
The psalmist describes being chastened sore by the Lord, but not given over to death, asking the gates of righteousness be opened to him, that he may enter and praise the Lord, declaring famously, “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner,” a verse the New Testament directly applies to Christ, rejected by His own people yet becoming the very cornerstone of God’s redemptive plan, closing with joyful celebration, “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it,” and a repeated call to give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His mercy enduring forever.
